"Unscented" vs "Fragrance-Free": One Actually Protects You. The Other Doesn't.

"Unscented" vs "Fragrance-Free": One Actually Protects You. The Other Doesn't.

If you've ever picked up a skincare product labelled "unscented" and assumed it was the safer, cleaner choice — you're not alone. But there's a critical difference between "unscented" and "fragrance-free" that most brands are counting on you not to know.

"Unscented" Is the Trick

"Unscented" simply means you can't smell it. That's it. It says nothing about what's actually in the formula.

Brands can legally add masking fragrances — chemicals specifically designed to neutralise the scent of other ingredients — and still call a product unscented. You can't smell them, but they're still sitting on your skin.

"Unscented" products often include:

  • Fragrance / Parfum
  • Aroma and masking agents
  • Essential oils
  • Phthalates (used to make fragrance last longer)

"Fragrance-Free" Is What You Actually Want

Fragrance-free means no fragrance ingredients have been added — full stop. You won't find Fragrance, Parfum, Aroma, or masking scents on the INCI list. What you see is what you get.

This distinction matters especially for:

  • Sensitive or reactive skin
  • Products used on intimate areas
  • Anyone managing hormonal conditions, allergies, or skin barrier issues

Your 10-Second Label Check

Next time you're shopping, flip the product over and scan the INCI (ingredients) list. If you see "Parfum" or "Fragrance" anywhere — even on a product marketed as unscented — it is not truly fragrance-free.

In Australia, brands can legally group dozens of individual chemicals under that single word without disclosing them individually. One word. Many hidden chemicals.

Here's your quick checklist:

  • Check the first 5 ingredients — the highest concentration ingredients are listed first
  • 🚩 "Fragrance" or "Parfum" = flag it — regardless of how the product is marketed
  • Pause before you buy — if you can't verify it's fragrance-free, it probably isn't
